A “Well-Known Name” Does NOT Mean They Will Do a Good Job

December 15, 2010

Just because a Company, Sales Rep., manufacturer is recognizable because they spend a fortune on advertising, or has a GREAT website, does NOT mean that they have a good reputation to back it up.   A “recognizable name” along with the “lowest bid” might actually be a big red flag. This is part of an on-going series concerning acceptance of “the lowest bid” and you get what you pay for. In this particular case, the Home Owners truly went with the contractor with the most “recognizable” name and the lowest bid; in her own words, “Nobody could touch this Contractors prices“.   On top of this, she and her husband thought that they would save even more money by acting as their own “contractors” and overseeing the project themselves by NOT hiring a Professional Designer and would act as their own “contractors”. Unfortunately, they do not have the experience to know how things SHOULD be done, or to recognize when things have been done WRONG. Case in point:

Why You Need to Hire Platinum Home Staging

In this picture: The trained eye will notice immediately that the travertine tiles were installed AGAINST the baseboard of the wall.

This means that the once 4 1/4″ standard baseboard is now approximately a 2″ baseboard due to the fact that the tile was PERMANENTLY  installed, grouted and sealed up against the baseboard.  If this Home Owner (or any future Home Owner) wants to replace these baseboards they will have to actually CUT the current baseboard flush with the new travertine tile, then rip them out, to install or upgrade to anything else.

The baseboard should have been removed completely, the new travertine flooring should have THEN been installed and grouted; then ALL NEW baseboards should have been selected, installed and painted.

It doesn’t take a trained eye to know what’s wrong here in Picture #2.  But none the less, a Professional would have caught this immediately, not after the Contractor was “paid” for the work.

More blogs will follow regarding these very issues and why it is imperative to have a Professional assist you with the remodel, design and CARE for your home.  Our Professionals are fully licensed and insured and will not only walk you through the entire remodeling process, but will be constantly looking out for your home and assets.  Call us today to schedule your appointment at (805) 553~9952.   Platinum Home Staging & Interior Design

Wow. I feel for those homeowners who must be kicking themselves now. It comes down to a couple rules of thumb that usually pan out: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is; and, you get what you pay for.

Cheaper isn’t always better. And a name brand is only as good as the person actually doing the work — and with a big company, you might not be able to check the references on that specific person doing the work.

    Solid post.
